APRC 2016 Strengthens Relations and Widens Cooperative Networking Among Students of Asean Universities

UUM ONLINE: The Institute of Public Relations Malaysia Student Association, UUM Chapter (IPRMSA-UUM Chapter), in collaboration with the Office of Student Development and Alumni (PPA), College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), successfully organised the ASEAN University Conference on Public Relations and Communication (APRC 2016) at the EDC Hotels & Resorts recently.

With a spirited theme, "One Vision, One Identity, One Community: Nurturing Network Public Relations in the ASEAN Community," the conference aimed to provide a multinational platform for presentations and discussions on issues related to the fields of public relations and communication aside from increasing the knowledge on communication issues among the ASEAN countries.

The APRC 2016 was officiated by the Deputy President of the Institute of Public Relations Malaysia (IPRM), Mr. Jaffri Amin Osman, who was also the guest of honour at the conference, while Dr. Elizabeth Goenawan Ananto, a lecturer and public relations practitioner from Trisakti University, Indonesia, delivered the keynote address at the conference.

In his opening remarks, Mr. Jaffri stated that the members of the younger generation today, who were more educated and tech-savvy, were in a good position to encourage a strong commitment among their counterparts in the network of ASEAN countries.

"Thus, I would like to call upon the participants in this conference, especially the youth, to play an active role in increasing awareness concerning ASEAN and encouraging others to take part in public relations initiatives and our networking efforts. The platform that this summit furnishes is the starting point for us to work towards establishing fellowship," he added.

Meanwhile, the Dean of PPA CAS, Dr. Massudi Mahmudin, said that the extensive participation of all stakeholders, especially the younger generation, would be immensely beneficial to the ASEAN network and the sense of connectedness that it fosters.

"By way of this conference, participants will have the opportunity to build a positive network and deliberate on concerns related to public relations and communication. It is hoped that this conference will generate constructive thinking among participants and set the milieu for future conferences," he said.

The APRC 2016 saw the participation of 154 presenters and 59 participants from 30 universities in the ASEAN region, including the Philippines, Cambodia, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Australia.

A member of the IPRMSA-UUM Chapter, Jamuna Krishnan, said that the conference was one of the most interesting experiences in her life.

"This conference has given us the opportunity to meet with our counterparts from ASEAN countries. Apart from being able to acquire new acquaintances from Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Cambodia, I have also been able to learn about their cultures," she added.

Meanwhile, for a participant from Indonesia, Yanuar Kartika Sari, the conference was a good platform, primarily for raising the level of relations and communication with students from universities in the ASEAN region.

"This conference has been really good. I have gained a lot of valuable experience and knowledge that I can take home. Apart from this, I have also been able to strengthen and expand relations and cooperation with university students in ASEAN countries," explained Yanuar.
