THE VICE-CHANCELLOR’S AIDILADHA 1438H MESSAGE

السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته

الله أكبر الله أكبر الله أكبر ولله الحمد

Alhamdulillah, let us give thanks to Allah (the Most Glorified and the Most Exalted) for it is because of His countless blessings that we get to celebrate one of the most auspicious days in Islam, which is known as the day of the Festival of Sacrifice (Hari Raya Korban).

On the occasion of this noble day, members of the Muslim community gather together and slaughter sacrificial livestock in commemoration of the defining event that occurred in the life of Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him), who upheld the command of Allah (the Most Glorified and the Most Exalted) to sacrifice his own son, Prophet Ismail (peace be upon him), as a sincere gesture of his complete subservience to the will of Allah, the Almighty.

This incident is replete with lessons brimming with wisdom, among which is that of sincerity and how important a role it plays in all aspects of life, such as the aspect of daily work, socialisation, and so on, apart from its relation to religious devotion. Indeed, know that every religious observance of humans will perish into nothingness except that of those who are truly sincere in the performance of theirs because of their complete faith in Allah (the Most Glorified and the Most Exalted), as illustrated by His injunction given in Surah al-Kauthar, verse 2, which goes:

“…Therefore, offer prayers only because of your Lord and offer sacrifices as a sign of gratitude…”

Performing religious sacrifices is an indication of our gratitude for the blessings that have been bestowed upon us so that all the blessings may be utilised beneficially on the path to the acceptance of Allah (the Most Glorified and the Most Exalted). It is hoped, too, that, with this devotional practice, negative attitudes such as miserliness, arrogance, and selfishness can be whittled away by positive actions such as contributing aid, monetary or otherwise, to those who need it, helping one another in the Muslim community, as well as actively fostering a caring society that takes pains to address the plight of the poor and the destitute.

Lastly, on the occasion of this noble day, my family and I wish the Muslim members of the Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) community, Happy Aidiladha. Let us, together, celebrate Aidiladha by strengthening fraternal ties through a caring and cooperative attitude to produce a community at UUM that will not only succeed in this life, but also gain the acceptance of Allah in the afterlife.
