UUM Welcomes 4,982 New Students, Including Students from the USA, Canada and France

UUM ONLINE: Sintok, 15 September 2026 – Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) has welcomed 4,982 new students for the First Semester of the 2026/2027 Academic Session, who will pursue 47 Bachelor's degree programmes. This intake comprises local students, international students and international mobility students.

UUM Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Ahmad Martadha Mohamed, said that   4,661 of the new students are local students, while the remaining 321 comprise international and international mobility students joining the UUM academic community this session.

“Of the local students, 4,413 accepted offers through UPU, while 246 are students who completed the UUM Foundation Studies in Management programme and two are local inbound mobility students.

“In terms of gender, this intake comprises 3,399 female students and 1,583 male students,” he said during a press conference held at the UUM Welcome Centre today.

The international student intake also reflects UUM’s growing geographical diversity, with 211 international students at the Bachelor's level from 20 countries.

According to him, the arrival of students from the United States (USA), Canada and France is particularly noteworthy, reflecting the appeal of UUM as an international higher education destination and its growing global recognition.

“Indonesia recorded the highest number of international students with 127, followed by China with 27, Thailand with 10, Bangladesh with 9, Qatar with 6 and Yemen with 5.

“There are four students each from India, Somalia and Pakistan, while Sudan has three. The USA and Saudi Arabia each contributed two students, with several other countries including Canada are also represented,” he said.

 In addition, UUM welcomed 110 international mobility students from various countries, including 50 from Indonesia, 26 from Uzbekistan, 20 from China, five from Pakistan, three each from France and Japan, two from the Philippines and one from Brunei.

In terms of academic programmes, the Bachelor of Accounting with Honours recorded the highest intake, with 446 students, followed by the Bachelor of Economics with Honours with 259 students and the Bachelor of Business Administration with Honours with 251 students.

Competition for admission to specific academic programmes remained high with both the Bachelor of Accounting with Honours and the Bachelor of Accounting (Information Systems) with Honours recording a minimum CGPA of 4.00 among students who completed the STPM and Matriculation programmes.

Meanwhile, Prof. Dr. Ahmad Martadha noted that UUM continues to provide access to higher education for students from diverse backgrounds. For the 2026/2027 intake, the university admitted nine students with disabilities (OKU) across various categories and eight “Orang Asli” (indigenous) students.

Also noteworthy was the admission of four sets of twins, who are pursuing studies in the Bachelor of Tourism Management with Honours, Bachelor of Finance with Honours, Bachelor of Public Management with Honours, and Bachelor of Agribusiness Management Science with Honours.

Student welfare remains a priority for UUM, with 96 students from low-income (B40) families receiving financial assistance to help alleviate the financial challenges associated with pursuing higher education.

This assistance was provided through the Welfare Fee Fund and TH-IQRA contributions managed by the UUM Zakat and Waqf Centre, reflecting the university's commitment to ensuring that financial constraints do not hinder students from pursuing their studies.

As of 30 August 2026, UUM has a total enrolment of 29,030 students, comprising 25,421 undergraduates and 3,609 postgraduate students.

The latest intake of new students underscores UUM’s appeal among both local and international students as a destination for higher education. It also reflects the diversity of the student population and the increasingly international character of the UUM academic community.

Prof. Dr. Bakti Hasan Basri; Registrar, Mr. Mohd Zulkifli Mohd Noor; Director of Academic Affairs (HEA), Mdm. Azian Nafiah; and the President of the UUM Student Representative Council (MPP) for the 2025/2026 session, Mr. Muhammad Syahmi Iman bin Muhammad Rezal.
